For the first time ever, Drum Corps International (DCI) broadcast its 2015 tour premiere performance live in cinemas throughout the country, allowing drum corps enthusiasts everywhere to experience the event in real time. The event, presented at more than 550 movie theaters throughout the U.S., featured performances from six corps described as the "nation's fiercest competitors."
The event kicked off DCI's annual summer tour, which travels through more than 35 states hosting over 100 competitions over the course of 53 days. In August, the tour finishes off with a week-long world championship competition where the top summer competitors duke it out for the championship title.
"The DCI events are extremely attention-grabbing and an amazing segment of our performing arts events that we bring to the big screen. Being able to watch these events live in theaters allows the audience to fully experience the talent of these teams," said John Rubey, CEO of Fathom Events, which brought the event to the big screen through its Digital Broadcast Network.
Participating corps included the Bluecoats of Canton, Ohio; the Carolina Crown of Fort Mill, South Carolina; the Madison Scouts of Madison, Wisconsin; The Cadets of Allentown, Pennsylvania; the Blue Stars of La Crosse, Wisconsin and the Cavaliers of Rosemont, Illinois. According to one commentator, the Madison Scouts wowed with their complex visual program and the Bluecoats' performance incorporated "the most interesting use of electronics [he has] ever heard in marching arts." Meanwhile, the Cavaliers and the Blue Stars both fell a bit flat, with no particular standout elements to their performances.
